A combination of VELUX skylights and Sun Tunnels makes a big difference!
The homeowner of this residence is in the Virginia Village neighborhood of east Denver. They were referred to us by a VELUX sales representative. Originally interested in six skylights, two large skylights and two Sun Tunnels was decided upon.

Because this installation is on a flat roof, it requires a curb to be constructed. The curb and its flashing becomes a part of the roof. The Sun Tunnel flashing will sit on top of the curb like the lid on a shoe box.
The curb allows the Sun Tunnel (or skylights) to sit above rain water and snow melt. It eliminates a source of leaks.

The benefits of a modern skylight are many.
- Modern low E3 glass is remarkably sophisticated—letting in plenty of light and blocking the majority of the sun's heat.
- Solar room darkening shades contribute to energy savings by blocking the sun's heat. They also act as an insulator to keep warmth in at night or on cold winter days.
- Remote controlled solar operated venting skylights will produce a chimney effect. They will draw in fresh air through open windows. They will expel hot air out the roof.
- This can create a significant reduction in AC use.
The Skylights Installation:
The procedure for the skylight installation is very comparable to the Sun Tunnels above. The location is established inside and transferred to the roof. A curtain of plastic sheeting is hung to contain dust and debris and the hole is cut.
Then, like above, a curb is constructed and flashed to become a part of the roof. This time though, a slight slope is built in to allow drainage of snow and rain from the skylight glass.
