My skylight was broken during a hail storm! What do I do?
Is it time to panic?
Protect your belongings.
Use plastic/painters drop cloths, shower curtains, trash bags, buckets, trash cans or the like to protect floors and furnishings.
After the storm has passed.
If only the outer acrylic dome or glass is broken—your skylight may not leak until it can get repaired.
If the skylight is broken all the way through—It needs to be covered until repairs can be made. Call us, our crews will be on alert.
Make sure lightning is not a concern. If you have the ability, climb up on your roof and wrap the skylights with plastic sheeting and all weather duct tape.
Brittle Acrylic
- Over time, acrylic materials lose the compounds that make them flexible, thus becoming brittle and susceptible to hail damage.
- The inner dome is protected and may survive, depending on the size of the hail.
- If only the outer acrylic dome or glass is broken—your skylight may not leak until it can get repaired.
Upgrade to glass or polycarbonate skylights.
